Interview - Yun Jung Kang, Everett Community College

Why did you decide to study in the U.S.A.?

The Aviation industry in the USA is not only full of cultures, but it also allows women to experience the opportunity to develop mechanical skills.

How did you choose your college?

I looked over schools that obtain a FAA approval for 1 year. Each school has a good system and program. But EvCC is better beyond comparison. At this school I have good program, and hands on training time is more than lecture. I get a complete set of equipment. Especially that it is located in Seattle that is well known for aviation. So I choose EvCC!

What do you like best?

I have independence in America. I live alone, keep my life to myself. I choose everything by myself. These make me more mature and more stronger. So, I love "independence".

What do you miss most?

I don't have any chance to laugh much because I am never free from care worries. And most of all, I can't understand a joke.

What was your biggest surprise?

When I study this major, Aviation Maintenance, in Korea, I couldn't have hands-on training in details. But EvCC has a realistic system and program. I can do everything by myself and directly.

...your biggest disappointment?

Bank system. American banking system is different from Korea. So I had to pay a fine because I didn't know about overcharge. Anyway, now I am used to checking my account often.

How have you handled finances?

I receive a full support from my parents, so I am not worried about money. Therefore, I spend all my energy on my (education) goal.

How easy or difficult is making friends?

Making friends is not difficult to me. In advance, my personality is really out-going, friendly and optimistic and I am not afraid of foreigners any more. I already have so many classmate friends who are American. We get along so well.

What is your advice to other students?

Relinquish all curiosity and fantasy about study abroad. It is real now. You can get a chance to live alone and handle money yourself. Those are sudden changes and freedoms, so it can become problems for many students. But at that moment, don't lose your goal.
